New Year

It’s the new year—007—a good number. As with most new years, it’s a time for reflecting on the past and dreaming about the future. A pretty cliched time to write, but I figure it’s been awhile since I’ve posted anything so it’s time for an update.

I read an interesting article in the Times this morning about free will, and our lack thereof.

“A bevy of experiments in recent years suggest that the conscious mind is like a monkey riding a tiger of subconscious decisions and actions in progress, frantically making up stories about being in control.”

I guess that takes a lot of the pressure off of trying to make something out of life—might as well just laugh and enjoy it.

And so I continue my quest to make music, and to try to express meaningful ideas through it. After all, I don’t really have a choice. I’ve been working on the new single Every Single Day for several weeks now. Most of the tracking is done. I’m working on the strings right now, which will hopefully bring the whole mix together like it did on Change Before Your Eyes.

For me, the vocals are the key ingredient, and I’ve started working out a few ideas and recording some parts. I’d like to interweave some of the vocals with the strings and kinda of create one texture out of them in certain sections of the song.

Other than that, I’m still doing some rearranging and tracking other minor elements. Mostly playing around and having fun trying ideas out. It’s easy to be adventurous at this point… working in Pro Tools has really streamlined things, and made experimentation a big factor in my production process.

Anyways… that’s it for now. I hope everyone has a fabulous year, full of great music and abundant expressions of free will.
